Special Projects

Some of these are personal, or in collaboration with friends or non-commercial, others not.

Codes used: W4H (work for hire), NPP (no paid positions) , Ft/Pt (full time or part time), Freelance.

Some of my commercial clients allow for sneak peeks, others don't.   Here is a list of the ones I can tell you about:

Yikes-To-Yummy. com

I haven't had the time to work on Y2Y other than to rough out the design for the interface.   It will be a big project; this is something that Google should have done.  Many people don't know this but there are quite a few search "algorithms" that are "better" than the one used by Google and the software engineers at Oddhobby developed one of them.  Of course it would take all of 2 seconds for them to switch to a better algorithm, and of course they have the resources to develop new ones or buy existing ones.  I'm just saying that at this point, the Oddhobby search engine would function in a different (better) way for this kind of project.  But I'm not sure how they can make it happen without some external funding… a grant or large donation.  Times are hard, and art donors aren't that easy to come by.   Oddhobby is a long standing client of mine.  I can't really get into details about Oddhobby other than to say they're committed to reopening "The Weird Store".   Anyone with a small business is very concerned about taxes etc. going into 2011.  Many of my clients (not just Oddhobby) have put projects on hold or scrapped them altogether. There are a couple of other Oddhobby related projects that I can't talk about but I really hope make to production.  So I'm hoping that my supporters also support Oddhobby and the Weird Store.

  • Due Date: No due date at this time.
  • Start Date: After "TheFOO.com" site is redesigned and reopened.
  • What: An art search engine–my pet project supported by Oddhobby.
  • Where: http://www.yikes-to-yummy.com
  • Who To Contact:  Join Thefoo (when available) or watch me at DeviantArt or follow me on twitter
  • Status:  Some design work done.  No programming work or project plan for the front end (interface) the back end will use Oddhobby's proprietary search engine.
  • Why:  To help clients find artists.  There is so much art on the net that isn't properly credited. Y2Y will help put a name to a face so-to-speak.
  • How you can help: NPP.  Although the design will look nothing like a Wiki, it will be a Wiki like setup.  We'll need both artist and non-artist editors.  We'll also need SEO help: hits, links, spread the word.  Because this is sponsored by Oddhobby; we will use theFOO fanclub to coordinate volunteers (see TheFoo).

Oddhobby. com

Oddhobby is the flagship site of what used to be 5 ”e-Zines” (web sites):  Oddhobby, Geek Floyd and 2 other sites I’m not allowed to mention.  I can’t remember the name of the 5th site, but a screw up at Network Solutions (which used to be the only US registrar back then) caused Oddhobby’s owners to lose the domain to another owner.   If I’m not mistaken it was something like “You.com” or “Geek.com” ; it was a biggy.    So they trademarked their web sites and opened a web store.  Later, they added thefoo.com for a fan club (the Friends Of Oddhobby).   I’m not going into the full history of Oddhobby here, but it was one of the first e-zines on the net, therefore had more content stolen than ad revenue.    The first version had to close because,  back  then, artists and writers didn’t understand that there was no way for Oddhobby to keep people from copying content.

The WeirdStore. com

This is Oddhobby's Weird Store of UseNet fame.  It did well on the net but had a few setbacks here in real life; mainly one of the key partners died at an early age.   In spite numerous issues, the remaining partners kept the customers happy.  So to preserve their reputation, they once again shut everything down (but they still handle email orders for some of their oddest products: Trepanation and "Drink urine" documentaries).   Buy strange things at weird-store.com (take out the spaces add @).   I've always wanted to design an e-commerce site that was easy to use and more than just a one colored catalog on a screen.  Any designer will tell you it's not easy to do.  I actually started designing this over 5 years ago!   So, I'm really hopeful that the store reopens soon; not just because of my commissions, but because I think I've done something very few designers have done.  Most of the design is done but as time went by, the choice of shopping carts changed from internal design to finding a 3rd party cart.  So far, no cart has been selected. If you are a shopping cart vendor contact John Lee at JHLMC—same if you have a product to advertise or to sell.

  • Due Date: The due date was pushed to summer 2011
  • Start Date: Already started… but on hold
  • What: Oddhobby's Weird Store (alt.fan.weird-store for you old timers)
  • Where: http://www.weirdstore.com
  • Who To Contact:  JHLMC does the project management—visit their site (http://www.jhlmc.com) or follow them on twitter: @JHLmConsultants
  • Status:  Needs a new shopping cart.  After that I will customize the cart to fit the motif of the new site.
  • Why:  The Weird Store is still a very competitive source for unusual products.
  • How you can help: Keep checking the site, let them know about any strange products you want, sign up for The FOO or RSS when available.  Buy from the Amazon links or click the sponsor links when you see something that interests you.
